The Historic Dockyard Chatham

All shipshape with the help of Parex Streetscape hard landscaping mortars

A high strength Parex mortar has contributed to major hard landscaping works completed as part of a wider public realm project to deliver a “sense of arrival” and enhance the visitor experience at The Historic Dockyard Chatham.

New high quality Belgian blue walkways called the Broad Walks, a new access road and visitor car park contribute towards the overall £2 million “Command of the Oceans” scheme which also encompasses the preservation of scheduled and ancient monuments.

A combination of paving types and styles ranging from uniform granite units to traditional stone setts form a blend of identities indicating walkways, crossing points and features.

In consultation with the charitable Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust, main contractor Raymond Brown Construction Ltd, of Rochester, Kent, specified Parex Granatech in mid-grey colour for the re-jointing and new jointing of paving elements.

The choice was based upon the contractor’s previous experience using Parex Streetscape materials and Granatech was specified following the construction of sample panels on site. An area of approximately 1,000 m2 was jointed over two phases using slurry-applied Granatech to penetrate between the joints to form a void-free joints between the paving units.

The overall scheme was phased over a seven month period to ensure continued access for the many visitors to the Historic Dockyard and for some 250 residents living in the vicinity. Other works included excavation of the Brunel Canal entrance, construction of a new gabion wall, installation of new drainage, street lighting and street furniture.

The award-winning Historic Dockyard is a major visitor attraction and is home to three historic warships, a working ropery, museums, galleries and displays dedicated to all things maritime and nautical.
