Phoenix Place, Liverpool

Phoenix student accommodation rises in central Liverpool. A new £18 million complex providing contemporary student accommodation in Liverpool has been designed to incorporate high levels of energy-efficiency, insulation and comfort with the help of a PAREXTHERM Acrylic External Wall Insulation System (EWI).

Phoenix Place comprises two blocks of six and seven-storeys which house 348 student rooms (274 cluster rooms and 74 studios) built by Nobles Construction, of Liverpool, and operated by Urban Student Life (Valeo USL Limited). The new development stands on land which formerly occupied Nobles’ offices, which were demolished to make way for the new development.

The buildings have a structural steel frame with main facades featuring the PAREXTHERM EWI system finished in three contrasting colours of Parex Acrylic renders. Due to the buildings location and orientation, the wind loading on the system was high so full design calculations were completed to ensure the correct fixing solution was gained. To meet the required fire rating classification, the system features a 12mm external grade render board to which 200mm of Rockwool Dual Density mineral wool insulation was both mechanically fixed and adhesively bonded using Parex Maite.

Specialist applicator IMS Facades Ltd, of Birkenhead then applied a Zone 4 render system comprising of an enhanced Parex Maite base coat, embedded throughout with Parex 355 AVU reinforcing mesh.

This was followed by a primer coat of Parex Revlane+ Regulateur prior to the application of a fine grain top coat of Parex Revlane+ Ignifuge acrylic render in three different colours enhanced with Parex Paraguard. Colours, Natural White (PG00) was used for the substantive sections of the façade framed by string courses of Clay Earth (PT30) which form a break between the rendered sections and brickwork at ground floor level and Causeway Grey was specified for a further band of render at the top floor level and for window surrounds in the brickwork gables which extend to roof height.

Phoenix Place offers several levels of studios and apartments which incorporate “turnkey” facilities with everything the tenants need to commence university life. The complex also houses reception facilities, extensive common and social room space and associated facilities. It is easy walking distance walk of three of the city’s leading universities and the city centre.

The site is at the centre of a major regional redevelopment project adjacent to a new supermarket, sports and leisure facilities.
