“Inside” job for Parex technical mortars

KEY materials from the Parex technical mortars range are playing their part in the construction of the UK’s largest “flat pack” prison project.

Precast construction specialist PCE Design & Build is using the high strength mortars during an 18-month construction programme involving 11 buildings at the new HMP Featherstone 2 complex near Wolverhampton.

The multi-million pound contract for main contractor Kier Build on behalf of the Ministry of Justice included the construction of three large houseblocks all featuring precast concrete units totally fabricated off site by sic UK manufacturers.
Parex Thixotropic Joint Filler is being pumped into the vertical joint connections between the crosswalls to provide shutter-free high strength grouting at corners and other joints.

The material is mixed on site in a large grout pump. A long hose is then inserted down the joint to the bottom, pumping then begins, the hose is gradually pulled up the joint as the material oozes from either side of the connection. Once the joint is full, the material is left for an hour before being striking back to leave a flush finish.

CS Grout is being used for horizontal slab-slab connections and some horizontal panel ties on duct riser and other precast units.

Bedding Mortar SF provides bedding for bearing locations for panels, and is also used for filling vertical tie bar connection pockets, and a making good material.

PPM, Skim Coat and CR Mortar Fine are all being used in various locations for making good and fine finishing work.
