Parex Streetscape chosen for major public realm landscaping project at Westquay Shopping Centre, Southampton

A system combining BS7533 Streetscape mortars was specified for extensive hard landscaping at an extension to a flagship retail development in the port of Southampton. Parex mortars were used for bedding, bonding a jointing the new natural stone paved areas occupying some 10,000 square metres around the prestige retail project at Westquay for Hammerson Shopping Centres.

Main contractor for the overall scheme was Sir Robert McAlpine, of Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, with the Bristol-based Carey Group PLC responsible for the high quality external landscaping scheme.

Five specialist mortars were used during the project including Parex Fine Bedding Concrete (FBC) which was mixed on demand from two on-site silos which were replenished at a rate of around 20 tonnes of factory blended mortar per day as 15 teams worked simultaneously to meet programme.

Working to hard landscape designs by Grant Associates, specialist sub-contactors Carey Group PLC, laid a variety of natural granite paving supplied by Hardscape. The colours specified were: Barley Corn, Heron Grey, Magma (brown/reddy-beige) and Kobra Black. Each of these were then textured in either a bush hammered or flamed finish to create a more diverse visual appearance using the same fairly limited colour mix. The stone was sawn on the base and sides with the last 10mm on each side split after sawing to provide a slightly irregular edge.

Additionally, Purbeck stone was specified for the stairway area. This was specified with a bush hammered finish and sawn on all sides and base.

All components for the main paved plaza were laid on a bedding layer of Parex FBC, with a slurry applied coating of Parex Bond Plus used to form a high strength bond on the laid surface. Parex Granatech was then used for the nominal 10mm joints with large areas treated by slurry application followed by mechanical belt cleaning.

High strength Parex Kerbfix, a high strength polyester resin based mortar, was used to bond the step sections while Parex Standard Mortar in Natural was used for bonding the planters and to form the joints of the step units.
