Brighter outlook with Parex

THE NEW MET OFFICE HPC COMPLEX, EXETER SCIENCE PARK, CLYST HONITON, DEVON

The Met Office HPC complex in Devon features high quality hard landscaped surroundings recently completed using a Parex mortar system for bedding, bonding and jointing.

Three products from the Parex BS7533-compliant Streetscape range have been combined in a system for the natural stone paving scheme at the centre which will house part of the new Met Office “supercomputer”.

Parex materials were specified as part of a design & build value engineering programme and were supplied via Parex South West distributor SIG Construction Accessories, of Bristol.

Some 1,700 square metres of external paving have been used to create a highly visual frontage to the new centre which is due to become fully operational (when). The Parex system was specified by main external work contractor Dancourt, of Bristol, Avon, for the scheme which features 300 mm wide, 75 mm deep Marshalls granite paving in random lengths up to 900 mm.

Three shades of grey paving – dark grey flamed, fine picked medium grey and fined picked light grey  were used for the concourse to the pedestrian area with the paving units laid in broken bond and random sizes to reduce the visual scale of the area.

During the four month contract, Parex Fine Bedding Concrete (FBC) was used for bedding the paved elements on a 40 mm deep base. The material was silo-supplied enabling consistent batch mixing on demand and providing significant on-site benefits including reduced waste, less dust, reduced packaging and improved health & safety.

Parex Bond Plus mortar was applied to each unit and the surface of the base to strengthen the bond between the underside of the slabs and the FBC. The nominal  10 mm joints were then filled using Parex Granatech 40 high strength jointing mortar in mid  grey.

Following application, the Granatech was allowed to partially set before removing any excess using a mechanical belt cleaner on hire from Parex.

Main contractor for the whole project is Wilmott Dixon, South West with Stride Treglown, of Bristol, as Landscape Architects.
